Pushing back the start of school
- The most common solution that many school districts are trying to initiate seems to be pushing back the starting time of school
This posses a change in the life of the parents and teachers...
- Should the lives of parents, teachers, and even employers have to change simply because teens are not getting enough sleep?
- Perhaps it is worth it for the employers if they think about the future. Teens’ getting more sleep has a strong correlation with teens performing better in school; in the long run, would an employer not want employees with higher academic performance? And many teachers and parents have actually started petitioning for a later school after they learned about the positive benefits of a teen gaining more sleep.
Other solutions
- Sleep education
Educating the community about sleep, sleep disorders, and biological rhythms by starting a sleep curriculum in high and middle schools would help educate the students on the importance of receiving enough sleep.
- Decreasing the nightly homework load
Students would be able to go to bed earlier, instead of one or two am.
- Limiting how late after school activities can run
Another way to make up for the early school starting time is to put a limit on how late practices and extracurricular activates can run to, giving students time afterwards to do homework and get to bed.
